The term electric motorcycle refers to any powered, two-wheeled vehicle in the UK with a motor of an output of over 2 kW that can exceed 28 mph. The Department of Transport has created several categories of motorcycle to ensure that younger riders gradually progress to larger and more powerful models until they reach the age of 21.
Light electric motorbikes – minimum age 17 and up to 11 kW continuous power.
Standard electric motorbikes – minimum age 19 and up to 35 kW continuous power.
Unlimited electric motorbikes – minimum age 21 for progressive access or 24 for direct access.
