The 2022 Zero SR/S
Zero has not been resting on its laurels, so for 2022 there are a number of important upgrades to the SR/S, which is now controlled by the all-new, Cypher 3+, operating system. The Zero SR/S electric motorbike is the fully faired version of the SR/F, but with higher bars, lowered foot pegs, suspension tuned for long-range comfort, a larger pillion seat and a wider LED headlamp.
Upgrades for 2022 include a completely re-designed Power Pack, which offers options between 14.4 kWh (Standard), 15.6 kWh (Premium) and an upgrade capability on either model to 17.3 kWh. These increases in capacity yield a proportionate improvement in range, which now delivers an impressive 187 city miles or 93 motorway miles. A typical mixed cycle of around 120 miles can also be expected from the full, 17.3 kWh upgrade.
A completely new, flat-six charger unit has been fitted to both SR/S models, but is enabled for 3kW charging from a Type 2 EV charger on the Standard model or 6kW charging* on the Premium. Wireless upgrade options through the Cypher Store allow the Standard model to match the 6kW of the Premium, and both models can benefit from a further upgrade to around 6.9* kW. An optional mains (10 Amp) charger is available, which will extend the charging time of the Standard 14.4 kWh Power Pack to around six hours.
In addition to the wireless upgrades mentioned above, the 2022 SR/S also benefits from a further charger upgrade giving either 9kW* or 12kW* of onboard charging from the optional Charge Tank. Combining all charger upgrades enables a charge time of under an hour for the standard 14.4 kWh Power Pack or an hour and twenty minutes for the extended 17.3 kWh pack.
Further wireless upgrades from the Cypher Store include the addition of Park Mode, which provides a very useful, slow-speed forward and reverse capability, and Turn-By-Turn navigation, which uses Bluetooth to pass navigation information from a smartphone to the new TFT display.
The Z-Force 75-10 motor is linked to a controller capable of delivering up to 900 amps, which yields a peak output of 82 kW (110 hp) at 5,000 RPM and an astounding 190 Nm (140 ft lb) of torque, from just a few RPM. At just 505 lb (229 kg) this translates to a real-world 0-60 of just over 3 seconds, which doesn't require any special launch control technology or a race-trained rider; simply select Sport or Canyon mode, twist the throttle and hold on tight, all the way to a top speed of 124 mph.
The 43 mm, Big Piston, Showa front forks and rear, 40mm piston, piggyback reservoir shock both have fully adjustable preload, compression and rebound damping. Under the control of the Bosch Advanced MSC, which manages the ABS and traction control functions, up front there's a pair of 320 mm discs that are gripped by meaty, monobloc, 4-piston J-Juan callipers and on the rear there's a 240 mm disc with a single piston calliper.
The SR/S is a highly customisable electric motorcycle with five different riding modes plus Custom modes, adjustable engine braking (with varying degrees of energy recovery), adjustable traction control and adjustable drag torque control with a 30% slipper clutch effect. Aside from the riding modes, which are selected from the switchgear and viewed on the all-new TFT colour dash, everything is controlled from Zero's mobile app over a Bluetooth or mobile data connection.
Aside Bluetooth connectivity the SR/S has a Cellular and GPS module that allows connection to the new Cypher Store and provides real-time tracking via the mobile app, along with a range of other data about the bike.
All lighting is provided by high output, low energy LED technology and an RFID immobiliser protects the SR/S from being activated without an original key.
